ORNL’s partnerships in the First State are focused on developing renewable plastics and biofuels. These efforts build on Delaware’s well-established chemical manufacturing industry and Wilmington’s recognized research and development strengths.
ORNL’s user facilities offer a diverse set of tools for experiments across a range of fields, including biology, materials and energy sciences, physics, engineering, and chemistry. Learn more about ORNL’s user facilities. Data reflects fiscal year 2020 except for scientific publications, which covers 2016–2020. Partner stories reflect work conducted from 2016 to present.
ORNL partners with the Center for Plastics Innovation, one of the Department of Energy’s Energy Frontier Research Centers, led by the University of Delaware. This center is tackling the problems created by plastic waste through fresh innovation. Currently, these partners are working toward ways to upcycle plastic waste by transforming it into useful products. Developments in this critical area could eliminate the need to presort plastic mixtures, lowering costs associated with the conversion process.
